10 signs and symptoms of eye problems

Everyone must have had experienced eye problems at some point in their life. Short and long sight-sightedness is very common among people. You may also know them as myopia and hyperopia.

The 21st century has seen a great development in science and technology. Some of the wonderful man-made creations are smartphones, computers, and televisions. These curious gadgets add joy and entertainment to our lives. They are also essential for business today.

As useful as they are, these gadgets never fall short in effecting our eyes. Most of us are addicted to these amazing pieces of work.

The results are ever-increasing eye problems which add to the existing ones. National Institutes of Health reveal that almost 14 million people are visually impaired.
Optometrists and ophthalmologists recommend regular eye checks even when there are no signs. It is more important for people with diabetes and high blood pressure.

With so many prevailing problems, it is requisite to know eye problem symptoms. Ranging from mild to extreme, there are various signs and symptoms of eye problems.

Eye problems – Symptoms

Puffed up eyes
Swelling can either be around the eye or the eye itself. Swollen eyes and swelling around the eye can affect the eye tissues. They are generally associated with the black eye, allergies, scleritis, Grave’s disease, blocked tear duct, and retinoblastoma.

Eyespots
There are many types of spots on eyes. They are classified as brown, white or cloudy, red or pink, yellow, and colored spots on eyelids. They are all abnormal appearances and growths on your eye.

• Brown spots: Usually found on iris or conjunctiva, a brown spot can mean nevus or ocular melanoma.
• White or cloudy spots: These spots are on the eye, or you can see them through the pupil. Corneal ulcer, retinoblastoma, and uveitis are some of the reasons you may experience white or cloudy spots.
• Red or pink spots: It is quite often to find a red or pink spot on your eye during blood leakage. It is associated with hemorrhage in the eye conjunctiva.
• Yellow spots: You can find these spots on sclera near the cornea. It is mostly a result of Pinguecula and Pterygium.
• Eyelid spots: Spots on eyelids are sometimes found when you have a black eye or nevus.

Loss of vision
The loss in vision can be general, central or peripheral. General vision loss decreases central and peripheral vision. Central and peripheral is the loss of detail and side vision.

These eye problem symptoms generally point out to age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, hyphema, and retinitis pigmentosa.

Bloodshot eyes
It is clear that you have bloodshot eyes when you see red veins in the sclera (white) of the eye. It is recognizable.
There is always confusion involved when discussing bloodshot eyes. It is often confused with blood in eyes. They are different. Blood in eyes is when you see blood settled in your eyes. The diseases associated with these symptoms can be different or same.

You may find bloodshot or blood in eyes when you are affected with black eye, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, corneal abrasion, corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, eye allergies, fungal keratitis, glaucoma, herpes keratitis, hyphema or subconjunctival hemorrhage.

Blurry eyes
When you experience blurred eyesight, do not assume it to just be a long or short-sightedness. Your assumption is only the tip of the iceberg. There can be some serious issues with why you experience blurry eyes. Some of the diseases associated with blurry eyes are cataract, cellulitis, blocked tear duct, herpes keratitis, Fuchs’ dystrophy, pterygium, strabismus, diabetic retinopathy, and uveitis.

Tears
Excessive tearing is common among people. It is associated with bacterial keratitis, Bell’s palsy, blocked tear duct, conjunctivitis (pink eye), corneal abrasion, corneal laceration, dry eye, eye allergies or keratitis.

Vision distortion
When you find objects crooked or twisted, then you have distortion in your vision. It occurs due to AMD, astigmatism, pink eye, keratoconus, macular edema, macular hole or macular pucker.

Eye discharge
When you find excessive tears or mucus discharge from your eye, then you have problems. It is associated with keratitis, blocked tear duct, pink eye, corneal ulcer, dry eye, fungal keratitis or herpes keratitis.

Irritation
If you feel that your eyes are dry, itchy or burning, then you are suffering from eye irritation. It is a result of allergies, blepharitis, blocked tear duct, chalazia, and styes or keratitis.

Eye pain
There are different types of eye pain. You may feel pain in the eye, behind your eye or around it.
When you have a migraine, you can feel pain behind the eye. Pain around the eye is when your eyelids and tissues are affected.

If you have an injured eye, then you will find pain in the eye. Some diseases associated are keratitis, pink eye, ulcers, optic neuritis, and uveitis.
